The goal is to challenge again for a place in the top four. The question is whether West Ham is outdated. They captured the imagination by reaching the Europa League semi-finals last season, but a small team struggled to deal with the extra workload and David Moyes spent the summer trying to add more quality in several positions.

The positive is that West Ham have reduced their reliance on Michael Antonio, who looked exhausted during the second half of last season. The striker has had no competition for his place in the past 18 months, but the arrival of Gianluca Scamaca from Sassuolo gives Moyes’ attacking new look. Tall and powerful striker, Scamaka scored 16 goals in Serie A last season and moved into the Italy squad. The 23-year-old has all the makings of a fan favorite, despite a recent history of attacking players who are moving to Premier League From the Italian Serie A is not a huge fan.

However, the striking situation is not the only issue. Moyes needs more Said Benrahma and Nikola Vlasic in his attacking midfield. He’s hoping Flynn Downs can help a weary Thomas Suchek and Declan Rice in midfield. As for the defense, not all is well. Nayef Ajourd, Moroccan centre-back who signed a £30m deal from Rennes, could be out for three months after undergoing ankle surgery. Angelo Ogbonna is just back from a long knee injury. Issa Diop wants to leave, and Kurt Zouma was injured last season. Another huge season for Craig “Ballon” Dawson, then?

Of course, don’t panic yet. West Ham have made rapid progress in the past two years. But did the opponents begin to solve it? Moyes, who tore up his players after the defeat to Brighton on the final day forced West Ham to settle into the Europa League, has looked like he has run out of patience lately. It could be a test drive.
